It was well past midnight when Mack heard footsteps outside her tent. She grabbed her machete and quietly moved to the mesh window set in the door. In the dim light, she could just make out the silhouette of a tall, muscular man with a ponytail.

“Thank God,” she whispered, then raised her voice a notch. “Bonebrake, get in here,” she hissed, unzipping the tent door, and pulling back the flap to let him inside.

“Sharing a tent? I like it?” But there was no heart in his jest. She could hear the weariness in his voice.

“I hate to admit it, but I’m glad you’re back.”

“I almost didn’t make it back,” Bonebrake said, sitting down heavily. “And when I did, the villagers almost didn’t let me back in.”

Mack nodded. Since the attack, their hosts’ attitude toward the interlopers had become borderline hostel. According to Pepsy, it was only the high value these people placed on hospitality, and a measure of gratitude to Bonebrake for leading the dinosaur way from the village, that kept the Congolese from turning their guests out in the middle of the night.

“Are you hurt?” Mack asked.

“Got a cut on my shoulder,” he said. “I don’t think it’s too bad.”

“Take your shirt off. I’ll clean it up.” Mack dug out her first aid kit, while Bonebrake removed his torn and bloody shirt. She flicked on her flashlight and winced at what she saw. Scars crisscrossed his tanned, muscular back. Some of them were faint, others more recent.

“Your back looks like a road map,” she said, inspecting the laceration on his shoulder.

“And every street is a dead end,” he said.

She tried to smile but it came out as a wince as she cleaned the cut on his back. He didn’t even flinch as she rubbed ointment into the wound.

“It’s not too bad,” she said. “You’ve obviously dealt with worse.” She bit her lip. “And speaking of worse, Igor screwed us over.”

“What do you mean?” Bonebrake turned to face her.

She handed him the journal. “There’s a lot in here I can’t yet decipher, but I worked out his maps. He wasn’t leading us to Mbanza Mpimpá. He intentionally led us in right into the heart of Mokele-mbembe’s territory.”

Bones let out a low curse as he flipped through the pages.

“To make matters worse, the villagers are blaming him for the attack.”

“I think he did.” Bones closed the journal, then removed the object he wore around his neck. It was some sort of bone amulet on an old leather cord. She hadn’t noticed it before. He handed it to her.

“It kind of looks like a dinosaur.” She realized it was hollowed out. “Is it some kind of whistle?” She raised it to her lips and Bonebrake immediately snatched it away.

“That’s exactly what it is. When the Mokele-mbembe attacked his hut, Igor tossed this down to me and told me to use it to get her out of here. It’s like a dog whistle to that thing.”

Mack instinctively drew back, horrified at what she had almost done.
